AKIPRESS.COM - A strike is set to disrupt air travel at Paris hubs on Thursday, with the civil aviation authority saying carriers should prepare to reduce services out of Orly, the capital’s second-largest airport, by 20 percent, France24 reports.
A spokesman said the Charles de Gaulle main hub north of Paris would see delays rather than cancellations.
Air France expects to operate all long-haul flights, all flights to and from Paris Charles de Gaulle, as well as 80 percent of domestic flights to and from Paris Orly. The airline stated that passengers can postpone their trip until April 30, 2016 at no extra cost.
The rail link to Charles De Gaulle airport will also be disrupted due to a one-day general strike. France’s SNCF said 90 percent of trains would be operating normally across the country (click here for information in English).
Thursday’s strike has been called by the CGT union and is the latest industrial action over controversial plans to reform France's labour laws. The Socialist government argues the draft bill will boost hiring and reduce chronically high youth unemployment, but opponents say it cripples hard-won worker rights.
The latest European strike follows a walkout by members of Germany's biggest services sector union, Verdi, which led to the cancellation of more than 1,200 flights into and out of the country's main airports, with flag carrier Lufthansa among the hardest hit.
