PM Modi lauds Indian scientists for role in discovery of gravitational waves

AKIPRESS.COM - Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed joy over the historic detection of gravitational waves and lauded the role of Indian scientists in the project, reports PTI.

"Immensely proud that Indian scientists played an important role in this challenging quest," he tweeted.

Physicists have for the first time detected gravitational waves, or ripples in the fabric of space-time, confirming a prediction made by Albert Einstein 100 years ago and opening a new window to observe hitherto invisible exotic events in the universe.

In synchronised announcements on 11 Feb 2016 in Washington DC, London, Paris, Moscow, Pune and elsewhere, an international consortium of physicists revealed that the gravitational waves emanating from deep space were detected by two instruments in the US on September 14 last year.
