Small asteroid expected to make close flyby to Earth on March 5

AKIPRESS.COM - asteroid A small asteroid 2013 TX68 having an uncertain trajectory is going to pass close to Earth on March 5, 2016, NASA said.

Though, the distance of its pass isn’t exactly known so far, scientists said that they will soon accurately define its orbit. The asteroid is expected to fly past Earth as far away as 9 million miles (14.484 million km) or as near as 11,000 miles (17,700 km).

For contrast, the distance of the moon is roughly a quarter-million miles. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory astronomers said that the disparity in likely distances for its closest approach is because of the broad range of likely trajectories for the object, which has been tracked for just a short time post its discovery in 2013.

As per some estimation, the space rock could pass at 311,000 miles, which is nearly 1.3 Earth-moon distances.

But, in case the asteroid crosses at its nearest likely distance of only 11,000 miles, the flyby is going to be an very close one, less than twice the diameter of the Earth. In that case, the asteroid would reach even closer as compared to communications satellites.

Scientists said that at this time of an impact, no scenario has been considered, and there is no threat.

The preliminary estimates of asteroid 2013 TX68’s size have suggested that the space rock has a diameter of 38 meters, which is two times the size of the Chelyabinsk meteor that made an entry into Russian skies in February, 2013.
