Patrol officer fatally shoots knife attacker in Kazakhstan's Taldykorgan

AKIPRESS.COM - 10a0af7fd1af9f8e5febd33ad0afaff4Police in Taldykorgan fatally shot a man who attacked police officers with a knife, Almaty region police said Friday.

The authorities said they received a report on Wednesday about violation of traffic rules by the driver of the Toyota Camry 40 car that was seen moving in the regional center with toned windows, high speed, and without a front license plate.

On Thursday, the car was detected at the intersection of Tauelsizdik and Eskeldy-bi streets by a police patrol car with 3 officers inside.

When checking the documents, the driver tried to escape. Police managed to block his way and arrest him, the Almaty Internal Affairs Department said in a release on Friday.

2 women and 1 man were inside the car. While stopping the car, the passenger man attacked the police with a knife.

"Suppressing the resistance, the policeman opened fire with a service weapon, the attacker died of his injuries at the scene," Taldykorgan Chief of Police Colonel Yerlan Sansyzbaev said.

The materials of the case were sent to Almaty region special prosecutor's office to establish legality of using weapon while detention.
