Hong Kong protest leader Joshua Wong barred from entering Malaysia

AKIPRESS.COM - 150527152337-joshua-wong-denied-malaysia-0526-exlarge-169 Hong Kong student protest leader Joshua Wong was denied entry to Malaysia on Tuesday over fears his visit might damage the country's relationship with China, Malaysia's police chief said, reports CNN.

The teenage student leader, who led massive street occupations in Hong Kong last fall to demand greater voting rights, was planning to give a series of talks in Malaysia about the protests, as well as China's deadly crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

But upon arriving at an airport in Penang, Wong said he was halted by customs officials who demanded he return to Hong Kong immediately, citing a "government order."

"I asked 'What was the government order?' and he refused to reply, and just said 'Turn off your phone, do not contact anyone in Malaysia and get back on the plane," Wong said.

"I think it's a shame... I believe there were political motivations behind this action," he added.

Malaysia's Inspector-General of Police Abu Bakar Khalid told AFP there were fears Wong's visit would "harm our security."

"We know his anti-Chinese speeches," he said. "We do not want him to jeopardise our ties with China."
