Ashgabat hosts talks on regional program to support efforts on combating drugs in Afghanistan

AKIPRESS.COM - meetingThe fourth meeting of the Steering Committee of the Regional Programme to support the efforts on combating drugs in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on May 6.

The meeting reviewed the results of the Regional Programme in 2014 as well as listened to the main conclusions of mid-term evaluation and discussed the issues related to the measures to strengthen regional potential to fight against drug trafficking and cooperation in the framework of the regional program of UNODC.

During the meeting the officers of the Regional Programme of the UNODC, the heads of delegations of the Regional Programme and representatives of donor countries presented their reports. The Senior Coordinator of the UNODC Regional Programme Jeremy Milsom informed the members of the Steering Committee of the strategic directions for the years 2015-2019 in the framework of a new phase of the Regional Programme.

In this regard, it was noted that today, Turkmenistan stands as one of the strategic partners in the implementation of regional and interregional programs under the auspices of the world’s leading institutions. The participants of the session in their speeches stressed the special importance and the role of this forum in further building of the constructive cooperation which will meet the objectives of general well-being, sustainable development and progress in the region and around the world.

The participants noted the important role of Turkmenistan in enhancing the fruitful cooperation in the region and expressed their gratitude to the Turkmen side for the hospitality, ensuring a high level of the forum and creation of the optimal conditions for successful work.
