OSCE seminar promotes traffic safety in Turkmenistan

AKIPRESS.COM - 148811 Traffic management and road safety were the focus of an OSCE-organized seminar that concluded today in Ashgabat, OSCE press release said April 1.

Twenty officers from the Traffic Control Police Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan from across the country enhanced their knowledge about best practices in traffic law-enforcement and discussed ways to strengthen co-operation among all stakeholders with a view to improving traffic safety.

Three international experts from Serbia and Turkey provided a comprehensive overview of the road safety situation in other countries and highlighted integrated road systems and new technologies in road safety, including video control of roads.

“The Government of Turkmenistan has stepped up measures to strengthen road traffic security, reinforcing road safety controls and raising awareness among the population about road-related risks,” said Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat Ambassador Ivo Petrov.

“Today’s seminar marks a successful continuation of the OSCE Centre’s activities launched last year to support the efforts undertaken by the host Government. Regular exchanges of practical experiences among international and national experts will contribute to safer traffic across Turkmenistan.”

The seminar participants exchanged views on new methods of traffic police training and stressed the importance of enhancing driver education as well as the procedures of granting driver licenses.

“The seminar emphasizes that true traffic safety can be only achieved when all those using the roads - including drivers, passers-by and traffic police - are well informed of their responsibilities and we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of public awareness campaigns and proper driver training,” said Ambassador Petrov.
