OSCE, UN, ADB support first National Forum of Women in Kyrgyzstan

AKIPRESS.COM - The Foundation of the former President of Kyrgyzstan, Roza Otunbaeva, in co-operation with the United Nations (UN), the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other international donors, is supporting the first national Women’s Forum in Kyrgyzstan on 2 and 3 March 2015 in Bishkek.

The Forum focuses on the 90th anniversary of the Women's Movement of Kyrgyzstan, the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for advancement of women and girls and the 15th anniversary of Security Council resolution 1325 on the recognition of the importance of women in conflict prevention, resolution, and post-conflict reconstruction. Participants will also discuss women’s participation in political life, new challenges, economic empowerment of women, access to justice, access to health and education.

“Much has been achieved over the past 20 years; but we are still far away from achieving gender equality, in particular in decision-making at the political level,” said Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek Ambassador Sergey Kapinos. “It would be desirable that the 30 per cent quota existed not only for the list of candidates but would also translate into real seats for women in the Parliament.”

The purpose of the Forum is to create a platform for dialogue and co-operation in support of the national women's movement, a union of men and women working to empower women and girls and promote sustainable development and democratic governance, thereby giving an impetus to further development of the country.

The Forum is gathering around 1,200 people from seven regions (rayon) of Kyrgyzstan. Participants include members of governmental and non-governmental organizations, representatives of businesses, politics, trade unions, employers' organizations, scientists, artists, journalists and human rights activists.

The award ceremony and a concert will be held on 3 March at the Philharmonia Orchestra in Bishkek.
