Turkmenistan officials discuss legal reform during OSCE-supported visit to the Netherlands

AKIPRESS.COM - 1b0011ed158696670d5ae8c89741707c Four senior representatives of law-making and law-enforcement bodies from Turkmenistan today concluded a five-day OSCE-supported visit to The Hague that focused on best practices in criminal justice reform, reports OSCE press service.

Representatives of the Mejlis (Parliament), Supreme Court, Justice Ministry and the General Prosecutor’s Office got a comprehensive overview of the legal reform process and its implementation stages.

“Since 2007, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat has been supporting legal reforms in Turkmenistan with various activities aimed at improving the administration of criminal justice, including the elaboration of comprehensive commentaries to the Criminal Procedure Code of Turkmenistan and the Criminal Code of Turkmenistan”, said Ambassador Ivo Petrov, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.

“This study visit exposed the delegation from Turkmenistan to best national practices in the implementation of criminal justice reform in line with international standards, which, we believe, will contribute to the efforts of Turkmenistan’s government to further improve the administration of criminal justice in the country”.

The delegation met with officials of the Judiciary Council, Dutch Court, Council of State, Municipal Management and Ministry of Security and Justice. They were briefed on the Dutch legal system, practices of administering criminal justice and the role of different stakeholders in the process. They also visited the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Netherlands, as well as the International Court of Justice and the “Ombudsman” administration.
