Uzbek journalist accused of extremism released from prison

AKIPRESS.COM - 1f75448430856985076738b828135eb1 Journalist Khairullo Khamidov, who was jailed in 2010 for links to an extremist group, has been freed, said RFE/RL.

The Uzbek government did not comment on Khamidov's release, which came nearly a year before his prison sentence expired.

Khamidov hosted a popular radio program on a semiprivate station that dealt with Islam in the contemporary world, including how to cope with social issues such as homosexuality, prostitution, and chemical dependencies.

He was also well-known as a soccer commentator before his incarceration.
