AKIPRESS.COM - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will continue to support the Afghan National Security Forces in their fight against the Taliban militants, despite the alliance’s combat mission ends within next few days, reports Khaama Press Afghan News Agency.

Lieutenant General Carsten Jacobson, deputy commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) told reporters on Wednesday that the coalition forces will adopt the new non-combat Resolute Support Mission within the next one week.

Gen. Jacobson further added that the NATO-led forces would continue supporting the Afghan forces despite the NATO combat mission ends this year.

He said the Afghan forces would continue to their fight against the Taliban militants and NATO’s role would be to support the Afghan forces to defeat the insurgents.

Gen. Jacobson hoped that the Afghan forces would have the capability to counter all attacks by the Taliban militants next year.

Around 12,500 NATO troops, including US forces are expected to remain in Afghanistan under the new NATO non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on December 24 "the security of Afghanistan will be fully in the hands of the country’s 350,000 Afghan soldiers and police. But NATO Allies, together with many partner nations, will remain to train, advise and assist them." "We are not walking away."
