Surfer loses arm in shark attack in Australia

AKIPRESS.COM - shark West Australian victim of a shark attack has arrived in Perth for treatment after losing both his hands in a shark attack while surfing 700km away off the coastal town of Esperance, the Australian reports

Bunbury electrician Sean “Polly” Pollard, 23, was flown to Perth in a Royal Flying Doctor Service jet where he will be treated for “severe” injuries including the loss of one arm up to the elbow, his other hand and serious lacerations to his leg.

Earlier, a police escort had rushed blood to Jandakot Airport for transport to Esperance Hospital, where Mr Pollard was initially treated. The South Bunbury Football Club confirmed the victim’s name via Facebook.

“Thoughts are with Polly and his family from everyone at South Bunbury Football Club,” the club posted. “We are with you all the way mate.” A “shoot and kill” order allowing Department of Fisheries officers to hunt and kill the shark was issued shortly after the attack.

Fisheries officers killed a 3m to 4.5m great white shark which was “seen in the vicinity” and will be kept for research.

Esperance shire president Malcolm Heasman said the “holiday-maker” was being watched from the beach by his girlfriend, Claire Oakford, when he was attacked about 11am.

“He’s lost from the elbow down on his one arm and he’s either lost or its been severely savaged, his wrist on the other arm,” Esperance shire president Malcolm Heasman said. “He’s had severe lacerations on his leg.”
