Number of dengue fever cases in Taiwan on rise, authorities say

Bishkek (AKIpress) -

dengue The Center for Disease Control of Taiwan urged the public to be on high alert against dengue fever as an increasing number of cases are being reported this year, the Focus Taiwan reported.

The latest case is a 55-year-old man in southern Taiwan's Tainan City, who was confirmed to be infected with the mosquito-borne disease after he developed symptoms of fever and headache on July 19, the agency said. He is currently in hospital, receiving treatment, it said.

There have 378 confirmed cases of dengue fever in Taiwan so far this year, compared with some 200 during the same period in 2013, the CDC said, citing data valid as of July 25.

It said that among the 378 cases, 276 were indigenous and 102 were imported from countries that include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

Preventive measures such as draining water containers, cleaning up vector breeding sites close to residential areas and taking precautions against mosquito bites should be observed, the CDC said.

Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease spread by mosquitoes. The symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and skin rash. In a small proportion of cases, the disease can develop into the life-threatening hemorrhagic dengue fever.
