World's biggest aquatic insect found

AKIPRESS.COM - aquatic insect The world’s largest aquatic insect has been discovered in China.

The new critter is a type of Megaloptera, meaning large wing, and was discovered by scientists in Sichuan, China. Information on the insect is limited in English and so far it appears to lack an official name.

The insect that spends most of its life in the water has an impressive 21cm wingspan, according to IFL Science.

Other species of Megoloptera spend most of their lives as larvae in winter in swampy areas.

The majority of their adult life is short-lived and is mostly dedicated to mating.

Their brutal looking mandibles are more for males to show off to females, rather than for eating said Scientific American.
