4 killed as plane crashes into building in Kenya

AKIPRESS.COM - 1jIgYdL A cargo plane crashed into a commercial building on the outskirts of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, killing all four people on board, the Kenya Airports Authority said.

The Fokker 50 aircraft burst into flames after crashing at Utawala, about 17 kilometers (11 miles) east of Nairobi city center, the authority said in a statement on its Twitter account. An investigations team is at the scene, it said.

The aircraft was heading to Mogadishu, the capital of neighboring Somalia, and was transporting the stimulant khat, which is grown in Kenya, said Angela Tilitei, an official in the authority’s corporate affairs and communications office. No one was inside the building when the plane crashed, she said.

The crash happened at about 4 a.m., the Nairobi county police Commander Benson Kibue said. Rescue workers are checking the debris for more victims, Kibue said.
